Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Parade:
A Rich History

Our History

Since 1943

The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Parade is a vibrant celebration intertwined with the rich heritage of the Santa Maria Valley. Every year, it showcases the community's spirit with dazzling displays of horsemanship, local organizations, and a touch of Western flair.  But this beloved tradition boasts a fascinating history of its own.

Early Days

1940s

  • 1943: The Elks Recreation Foundation, formed by B.P.O.E. #1538, held its first event, a fundraising dance (Source: Santa Maria Elks Rodeo website: https://www.elksrec.com/p/about-us/history).

  • 1944: The inaugural Elks Rodeo takes place, then called the "Elks Recreational Foundation Benefit Wild West Show and Racing Meet." This event's success paves the way for the parade (Source: Santa Maria Elks Rodeo website: https://www.elksrec.com/p/about-us/history).

While the Elks Rodeo itself debuted in 1944, pinpointing the exact year the parade began remains a mystery.  Historical records suggest the parade likely emerged sometime in the 1950s or 1960s, possibly coinciding with the rodeo's growing popularity (Source: Santa Maria Elks Rodeo website: https://www.elksrec.com/p/about-us/history).
